Apple Japan to replace iPod Nano batteries

Apple Japan offers a battery replacement first-generation iPod Nano models, the device has seen its share of complaints about overheating, which caused fires and burns for some customers.

Information buried deep in the Apple Japan website links to a page from Apple indicates that the data about customers, their first-gen iPod Nanos overheating contact AppleCare for a new battery. Every customer who was suffering from overheating incident can contact AppleCare for a brand new iPod Nano units, Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr told CNET.

Overheating of the battery, which Apple says is in very rare cases, it is symptomatic of iPod Nanos sold between September 2005 and December 2006, and may prevent the device from working, or destroy his cabinet. Japan Apple claims that the problem was attributed to a single supplier of batteries and that it had received reports of similar problems in other models of iPod Nano.

The reports of batteries overheating emerged in 2008, when Japan Ministry Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) initiated an inquiry into the incidents units spark fires, resulting in minor burns some customers. The Ministry is suspected then that faulty batteries may cause overheating.

Since then, the defect has caused 27 cases of batteries overheating, including six fires that left four people with minor burns, according to the Ministry. She added that Apple just reported last week by 34 other less serious accidents overheating, delay, said that the Ministry was “truly regrettable”.

“We worked closely with METI, to ensure first-generation iPod nano customers who deal with the latest information of their batteries,” Neumayr said.

Apple sold about 1.8 million pieces of first-generation iPod nano in Japan since September 2005.
